There are a lot of books on the subject if you
fancy having a go at the real decorative stuff.
But not essential if you just want to splice the odd rope or
basic knot tying.
Living on a boat, I often find the need to splice a rope and
tying knots on almost a daily basis.
The following tools are not essential but you may find
some of them handy if you do a lot of rope work.
You will find plastic insulation tape very handy too,
to tape up the ends of the strands to stop them
fraying while you work on the rope, or you can use
a lighter or matches, to seal ends when using synthetic rope.
