How to make a solitary bee nest.
You will need:
A block of untreated softwood measuring approx 50mm x 100mm x 200mm.
Drill.
Drill bits 10mm 8mm 6mm and 4mm for making the holes.
A metal hook and some garden string for hanging the nest up.
What to do:
Drill a selection of holes of varying diameter between 4mm and 10mm
in the face of the block. The depth of the holes doesn't matter,
just make sure you don't drill all the way through the block.
Insert a metal hook in the top of the block and attach a suitable
length of garden string.
Hang at approximately head hight in a sunny spot in early March.

our "test bee nest"
From the one we made, we counted 12 different nests in our "test bee nest".
Solitary bees chose to nest in the 6mm and 4mm holes more often than the
larger holes, although other species may use the larger ones.
