Measuring the height of a tree

It is often of interest to know just how high certain trees are.
Here is a simple method of estimating height.


You will need a straight stick the same length as the distance
from your eye to your outstreched hand.



Hold the stick vertically before you at arms length. (see diagram)
Walk backwards or forwards in front of the tree untill the
top and bottom of the stick coincide with the top and bottom
of the tree.





The distance from where you are standing to the
base of the tree is then equal to the height of the tree.
